Steve is the owner and Managing Director of Australian Fitness Academy and has assisted thousands of people to achieve their dream of a career in the fitness industry.  His previous roles include the National Manager at Australian Fitness Academy, Fitness and Recreation Manager at Holmesglen Tafe and Training Manager at Fitnation.

Steve’s commitment to the fitness industry is to provide the highest quality training, professional development and support. His vision is for Australian Fitness Academy to be the number one training provider recommended by industry for the delivery of qualifications, career support and on-going professional development.

Steve believes the industry has a critical role in the overall health of the Australian population and in educating the community on the importance of being active.  Steve has assisted Fitness Australia and Service Skills in the review and development of qualifications for the fitness industry, as part of the Industry Reference Committee.

Steve’s life-long passion for fitness developed from his participation in the sport of athletics. He was a successful middle-distance runner and he maintains his addiction by coaching athletes at the Mentone Athletics Club and trying to unearth the next potential Olympian.

LAUREN COYLE – Education Manager

Lauren kick-started her career in the fitness industry after completing a Bachelor of Applied Science in Human Movement.  Lauren’s extensive knowledge base combined with her proactive nature has allowed her to develop and thrive in the growing area of corporate health and fitness. Evolving as a strong and influential personal trainer, Lauren quickly gained a solid client base and established herself as a reputable trainer capable of producing a wide variety of client based results.

A thirst for knowledge inspired Lauren to relocate to the UK, where a role as Master Trainer in one of London’s leading health clubs broadened her experience to an international level. Lauren developed strengths in the areas of corrective functional exercise, core conditioning and pre/post natal activity. Her thorough approach, energetic passion and positive attitude translates into every personal session, something Lauren now relays to AFA Personal Training students as she educates them to become leaders in the industry.

JAMES POYNTER – Business Operations Manager

James offers years of experience from the fitness education industry in the UK.

James loves to help people make an easy transition from study to employment and for this reason spends much of his time focusing on strengthening the Academy’s already existing links with industry and working on programs that help our students gain employment like guaranteed interviews and industry forums.

ANDY SMITH – Marketing Manager

Andy has been working in marketing since 2010 and joined the AFA team in September, 2016. Andy is passionate about digital marketing and fitness which is why this job was such a perfect for him. He’s worked in numerous industries throughout the UK, and now in Melbourne. He grew up playing lots of different sports, everything from Rugby, squash, golf and of course Football (or known as soccer here), to cross country he is now a keen competitive cyclist, racing throughout Victoria.

As the Marketing Manager at the Academy, Andy is involved with promoting and attracting potential students as well as developing and maintaining graduate support services, ensuring students receive continued support after completing their study and throughout their career in the fitness industry.

ASHLEE LANE – Training Manager

Qualifying as a Personal Trainer in 2009 Ashlee initially worked at Fitness First as a Contractor. After her first year she decided the indoor gym wasn’t for her and moved into outdoor training. Ashlee has since run her own outdoor training business and subcontracted outdoor fitness camps, boxing boot camps, one on one personal training, corporate fitness camps and group training for children (grades 3 and 4).

Having now moved into education she plays an active role in supporting AFA online students and believes, rightly so, that education is key. Improving the quality of trainers from the beginning of their careers with passionate, caring and knowledgeable lecturers will set a high standard for the future of our industry. Ashlee truly believes you will not be successful in this industry without a passion for what you do and a positive outlook on life.

LUKE JAMES – Course Development Coordinator & Lecturer

Born and bred in Sydney, Luke made the move to ‘sunny’ Melbourne mid 2014.

Luke has been working in the fitness industry for 10-years as a Gym Instructor, Personal Trainer and Health Coach. With a passion for teaching, Luke taught Physical Education at both Primary School and High School for 4 years prior to moving into Registered Training Organisations (RTO’s) to teach the Certificate III & IV in Fitness.

With an interest in Strength & Conditioning, Luke completed a Masters Degree and worked with Junior athletes in Rugby League.

Now a Course Development Coordinator and Lecturer at AFA, Luke is available to help students through their studies and offer a wealth of information, knowledge and experience.

Claire brings a wealth of knowledge, experience and passion to the AFA Support Team. Her studies in sport science have given her a comprehensive education in anatomy, kinesiology, management concepts in sport, fitness assessment and prescription and athletic training, this knowledge has enhanced her desire for health and fitness, leaving her with a passion to lead by example and teach others who are starting out in the fitness industry.

Claire continues to work as a Group Exercise Instructor and believes those that teach fitness should remain current in the industry to ensure they are at the forefront of industry practice and trends. Claire has also volunteered for various organisations offering her skills and expertise, her volunteer background has involved writing articles for Nutrition Australia, which have since been published on the Nutrition Australia website.

Kim joins the Australian Fitness Academy with a wealth of fitness education and PT experience. A Personal Trainer for 13 years, working mostly across gyms and personal training management, Kim has been involved in fitness and competitive martial arts from a young age having found a strong interest in resistance training and strength and conditioning at 16 with reoccurring injuries. Now a keen cyclist and CrossFit participant, Kim continues to work as a Personal Trainer and Group Exercise Instructor with the focus of changing peoples attitudes and perceptions towards an active lifestyle.

Sarah has a real passion for health and fitness and can be found training hard in the AFA gym most days. Sarah qualified as a Personal Trainer in 2008 and has since worked in a number of roles in the fitness industry including Fitness First in a sales and PT role and FitGym as a PT and Group Fitness Instructor.

Working as a full-time Student Support Officer and Lecturer, Sarah now also runs her own outdoor Personal Training Business Metacorr Fitness in the Eastern Suburbs. Sarah is available every day to chat with students needing support to help them through their course. Her passion for fitness coupled with her experience in the industry means Sarah can provide current, practical and relevant industry advice and always does so with a smile!

Nelby has been involved in sports and fitness from the time she could walk. She became a Personal Trainer in 1999 to follow her passion for all things health and fitness. This qualification has enabled her to work in various roles, including a Gym Instructor in Australia and Canada, a Personal Trainer for individuals, groups and corporations, a Boot Camp instructor and more recently a Health and Lifestyle Coordinator in remote mining villages. Nelby felt it was a natural progression to become a lecturer in Fitness as this gives her the opportunity to share her passion with students on the industry she has spent her life in.

Working with the Western Jets as a Strength and Conditioning Coach (under 16s) was a highlight of her career as she has a keen interest in AFL. In her spare time you will find Nelby playing Aussie rules footy in winter, beach volleyball in summer and mountain biking all year round.

Chris has been working in the fitness industry since 2010 where he began taking group fitness classes and coaching martial arts. After holding various roles as a personal trainer in gyms, and a sports trainer and strength and conditioning coach in the VFL and at local level, Chris began teaching the Certificate III and IV in fitness in order to share his knowledge with future personal trainers.

Tammy has been working in the Fitness Industry for the past 15 years where she has successfully performed a range of roles including personal trainer, lecturer and assessor, health and wellbeing presenter, corporate gym manager, group exercise instructor and exercise specialist.
Elite sport was the spark of Tammy’s interest in fitness where she was a scholarship holder at the Australian Institute of Sport for indoor Volleyball representing Australia for over three years. After retiring, she studied at Canberra Institute of Technology which served as a pathway into the fitness industry. Using her qualification she has gained employment in a range of corporate and commercial fitness facilities both interstate and overseas.

Tammy balances her time both lecturing certificate III & IV at AFA and operating her own Personal Training studio, having employed a recent AFA graduate into her business. Education is an element of passion for Tammy where she gets to pass on her knowledge and experiences to students first hand.

Claire has always been passionate about sport and fitness, choosing to follow her passions by doing sport and exercise sciences at uni, and then continuing on to become a teacher of Physical Education. After immigrating to Australia from England at the start of 2010 Claire qualified as a personal trainer and began to teach outdoor one-on-one and group training sessions in the early mornings and evenings whilst teaching Phys Ed and coaching sports in the day.

Through her personal training sessions Claire found an interest in injury prevention and rehabilitation. A rehabilitation course wet Claire’s appetite to learn more so she qualified as a Remedial Massage Therapist where she works most days providing remedial and sports massage to help people overcome injuries and prepare for competitions. Claire still works as a personal trainer and also coaches athletics and netball at several schools and holiday camps.

She joined the AFA team presenting the PDHPE course to qualified PE teachers but can now be seen lecturing to the full time Cert III and IV courses, particularly enjoying the module Exercise Prescription for Children, made easier through her years of experience teaching and coaching primary and secondary school children. In her spare time she is a competitive distance athlete and loves to travel.

Shane is a director of Personal Best, Head Lecturer & Brisbane Course Co-coordinator for Australian Fitness Academy.

Shane has 17 years of Personal Training experience and running a small business that has 4 locations in Brisbane and Sydney.

He has been fortunate enough to work with and be inspired by so many of his clients whom show human spirit and determination beyond their expectations. There are not many clients he has not trained and continues to train: the different ages, male and female, the “I can’t do” to the “can do”, the unfit to extremely fit, weight loss, muscle building to walkers to joggers.

Now teaching the Certificate III & IV in Fitness, Shane’s years of Business and PT experience has allowed him to evolve and educate the next generation of fitness professionals into the Personal Trainers they can be. Giving precedence to what industry employers and clients demand from their fitness professionals, Shane gives invaluable insight into the most rewarding long term fitness career that changes others’ lives and yours!

Personally, Shane is the proud father of two kids Ben and Charlotte and the lucky husband to his beautiful wife Nerissa. Together they contribute to a wonderful family and business life through helping each other achieve what they would like to achieve.

Shane enjoys surfing, touch football, triathlon, swimming, running, weight training, boxing and Pilates, just to name a few!!! He is into, One Word… EVERYTHING! He encourages the participation in everything and anything you would like to do. The focus is always on Participation.
