GYM SERVICES OFFICER at Goonellabah Sports & Aquatic Centre for Lismore City Council

Primary function:
The GSAC Gym Services Officer is a key member of the professional staff at the Goonellabah Sports and Aquatic Centre and Switch 24/7 Gym. As such, this position plays a vital role in directly supporting the Gym and Fitness Coordinator through the provision of leadership and direction in all operational and gym service-related activities within the Fitness Centre.
Ensuring the efficient use of resources, offering a diverse and innovative range of programs to meet customer needs, and ensuring all operations are compliant with industry standards and legislation.
The role requires marketing, promotion and advertising of gym programs and services to current and potential members, including new opportunities e.g., schools, new business, and new member possibilities. Organising promotions, launches and other events, providing input into marketing strategies to maintain and attract potential customers whilst advertising Switch Gym/GSAC through community events and business publicity.
The position reports to the GSAC Gym and Fitness Coordinator. GSAC is part of the Arts, Tourism and Leisure section of the Sustainable Development Directorate of Council.

Responsibilities and duties:
- To ensure the efficient operation of gym services including ongoing health consultations, gym programs, group fitness classes, promotions, and challenges.
- Conduct a thorough pre-exercise questionnaire for each member when required (including but not limited to introduction/orientation, exercise experience level, pre-existing injury check, and health and medical history check).
- Assist the Gym and Fitness Coordinator with promotion, marketing and sales of SWITCH Gym towards monthly budget targets.
- Face to face marketing and advertising campaigns of SWITCH Gym on and off site – including seasonal promotions in collaboration with the Gym Member Services Lead.
- Relationship marketing to increase awareness and membership base partnering with the Gym Member Services Lead.
- Help gather and analyse data to reach insights about brands, competitors, and trends.
- Measure and report performance of marketing campaigns, gain insights, and assess against goals.
- Develop and conduct program commencements, assessments, and personal training sessions, when required for new members.
- Assist members with the use of the facility and equipment, in a safe manner.
- To conduct daily opening and closing inspections of the building and equipment.
- Provide excellent customer service to members at all times.
- Monitor safety of the gym floor and equipment and complete relevant checklists before commencement of shifts and report any hazards or faulty equipment via the correct reporting procedure.
- Assist the Management Team with the day-to-day operations of the Centre.
- Perform other duties as directed by the Team Leader (Gym and Fitness Coordinator), as required.
- Participate in Gym Tours and assessments, as well as Group Fitness classes and Personal Training of customers, where required. (Group Fitness classes and Personal Training is to take place outside of the contracted 20 hours of the position)
- Risk management and WHS compliance, ensuring facilities and equipment are kept clean and safe to use at all times.
Entry level requirements:
- Regularly review instructor performance.
- Accurate record keeping and documentation.
- Be flexible and assist staff within all areas of the centre: reception, pool, and other spaces to ensure all centre operations run smoothly.
- Follow defined OHS policies and procedures: Follow Council procedures for hazard identification and risk control and raise WHS issues which need to be addressed.
- Follow Fitness Australia WHS protocols.
- Ensure accurate records are kept of all activities in line with WHS, compliance and Lismore City Council requirements.
- Demonstrate Council values (Passionate, Communicate, Respect, Strive).
Qualifications and experience:
Essential:
- Certificate III and Certificate IV in Fitness OR equivalent Sport and Exercise Science Bachelor Degree
- First Aid Certificate (HLTAID003) with current CPR
- Specific Group Fitness training
- Working with Children Check
- At least 2 years’ experience as a group fitness instructor
- Hands-on experience in developing campaigns and promotions
Desirable:
- Knowledge of recreation centre operations and programming.
- Intermediate computer skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Experience in marketing and/or advertising.
- Experience in social media content development and website design.
- Current driver’s license.
