Course Overview
The Certificate III in Fitness is a nationally recognised qualification that gives you everything you need to start working in the fitness industry.
Across the course, you’ll learn how to conduct health and fitness assessments, use that information to design and instruct group fitness programs, and analyse movement so you can coach gym members on correct technique and safe equipment use.
AFA has been delivering this qualification for over 33 years, combining rich online resources, including video presentations, downloadable lectures, live webinars and podcasts, with real-world practical placement in a partner gym or studio, so you graduate genuinely job-ready.
On completion, you’ll be qualified to work as a Group Exercise Instructor, and you’ll have a direct, streamlined pathway into the Certificate IV in Fitness to become a fully qualified Personal Trainer.

HYBRID STUDY
Our Hybrid Course is our most popular study option, which provides the best of both online and in-person education. You’ll receive access to theory content via our online learning system and combine this with one practical session per week in our fully equipped partner gyms. You will study under the guidance of an experienced and fully qualified Personal Trainer, while simultaneously completing your Work Experience!
This is a great way to study, as you can put what you have learned into practice and graduate as an industry-ready Group Fitness Instructor.

Hybrid Study
Studying our Hybrid course provides hands-on learning, without video assessments or work experience requirements. Receive in-person guidance and education from our industry experts, local to you. All practical assessments are observed and graded by your dedicated on-site assessor, so there’s no need to film and submit any videos.
You will also have access to our engaging online platform to submit theory assessments and refer back to as a resource for detailed slideshows, videos, animations, articles, downloadable lectures, live webinars, podcasts and more.
In addition, you’ll be able to network with like-minded fitness enthusiasts and future professionals, giving you the opportunity to build relationships and your very own contact database.

Online Study
Our Certificate III in Fitness Online is built for flexibility, providing a study method that fits in with your existing work and lifestyle commitments. You’ll have up to 12 months to complete the course at your own pace. There are no set dates for finishing modules and you’ll receive dedicated supported by our team of education professionals, who are available via phone, email or direct message throughout the week.
Once you receive full course access to AFA’s Learner Management System, you’ll be able to work your way through the modules via video presentations, assessments, quizzes, downloadable lectures, webinars, podcasts and other helpful learning tools.
We also provide a 10-business-day guaranteed turnaround time on your assessments, which means you’ll be able to progress through the course without any hold ups.
Whilst the course is predominantly completed online, students will also need to undertake 32 hours of Practical Placement independently at an approved gym or PT studio. If you have any difficulties finding a suitable facility, AFA can help connect you with one of our industry partners.
Students will also need to complete or update their First Aid within the 12-month time frame. The exact course code is HLTAID011, and this can be completed with any approved training provider across Australia.

Practical Placement
The Practical Placement component of our fitness qualifications provides a great opportunity to put the knowledge and skills learnt throughout the course into practice, helping you gain valuable experience in a real-life industry setting.
You can perform your placement at an approved fitness centre or Personal Training Studio of your choice under the supervision of a qualified Personal Trainer.
We find that many of our students go on to find employment in the fitness centres where they complete placement or through the connections they make throughout their work experience.
What’s required?
The Work Experience requirement is 32 hours of practical placement – for online students only.
If you choose to study the Hybrid Course, these Work Experience hours are included in your weekly on-campus sessions. Of course, we do encourage students to participate in Work Experience whether it is mandatory or not, as it does often provide valuable links to employment opportunities

Entry Requirements
There are no formal academic prerequisites to enrol in the Certificate III in Fitness, as it’s designed as an entry point into the industry.
To meet the assessment requirements throughout the course, students must have the physical capability to perform CPR on the floor and complete practical demonstrations of specific cardio and resistance exercises. AFA offers flexible learning and assessment strategies for students with disability, learning needs, or who require additional support.

eligibility & RPL
This course is available to all Australian/NZ citizens, permanent residents and visa holders who have the appropriate study rights. Note: AFA is not CRICOS-approved, so this course is not available to students on (or applying for) a student visa.
Students who have completed related qualifications or have relevant industry experience may be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). AFA’s Student Support team reviews each application and confirms which assessments, modules and/or units you may be eligible for exemptions based on your prior study/work experience. They will also communicate exactly what is left to complete.

payment options
AFA offers multiple payment options depending on your financial situation.
The most common option is via interest-free payment plans, where you can start studying with just a $100 deposit, then pay from as little as $50/week, $100/fortnight or $200/month. This ensures you can secure your spot with no large upfront costs or student loan debt.
Alternatively, students are able to pay up to a $1500 deposit. You would then have the option to pay the rest via the payment plan stated above, or make a second payment for the remaining balance when eligible.
Note: it is an ASQA requirement that students remain no more than $1500 ahead in payments at any given time during their enrolment. The AFA Careers Team will be able to communicate when students are eligible to make their subsequent payment to pay off their remaining balance.
Should a student wish to pay for the course entirely upfront, the only option is for a business (with a valid ABN) to pay on your behalf, in which AFA will invoice the business directly.
Course fees vary depending on study mode and Government Funding eligibility. Some state government initiatives may be available for eligible applicants.

Do I have to do a Cert 3 in Fitness before a Cert 4 in Fitness?
Yes, the Certificate III in Fitness is a prerequisite for the Certificate IV in Fitness. Many students choose our combined Certificate III & IV in Fitness pathway to study both back-to-back and fast-track their route to becoming a Personal Trainer.
What is the difference between Certificate 3 and Certificate 4 in Fitness?
The Certificate III is the entry-level qualification which focuses on working with clients in gym and group exercise environments, including developing and instructing group exercise classes.
Certificate IV takes this further into individualised exercise programming, client management and personal training. If your ultimate goal is to become a Personal Trainer, completing both qualifications is the most efficient pathway.
Do I need any previous experience or qualifications to study Certificate 3 in Fitness?
There are no formal entry requirements for the SIS30321 Certificate III in Fitness qualification under the national training package. You don’t need to have previously worked in a gym or hold another fitness qualification before starting the Certificate III.
AFA does conduct a pre-enrolment questionnaire to make sure students have the language, literacy, numeracy and digital skills needed to successfully complete the course.
Can I become a personal trainer with Certificate III in Fitness?
No, the Certificate III in Fitness alone does not qualify you as a Personal Trainer. You will also need to complete the Certificate IV in Fitness as well.
Can I study the Certificate 3 in Fitness online?
Yes. Our fully online course gives you up to 12 months of self-paced access to AFA’s Learner Management System, with all the video lectures, quizzes and assessments you need, plus a 32-hour practical placement you can arrange at an approved gym or studio.
Is the Certificate 3 in Fitness nationally recognised?
Yes, the SIS30321 Certificate III in Fitness is a nationally recognised Australian qualification listed on the Australian Government’s national training register. The qualification sits within the Sport, Fitness and Recreation Training Package and is delivered and assessed by AFA, which is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) that is approved to offer the qualification.
