There’s a common misconception that all personal trainers are young, buff and super energetic. Just walk into any gym in your local area, and you’ll see that this certainly isn’t the case.
The great thing about personal trainers is that anyone with an interest in fitness can become one, no matter what age or demographic. So if you think you’re too old to make a career change into the fitness industry, think again!
What is too old?
Whether you’re in your 30s, 40s, 50s or even 60s, there’s nothing stopping you from becoming a PT. People change their careers into several industries in these age brackets all the time, so there’s no reason why fitness should be any different. In fact, here at AFA, we have many career changers who have studied with us after becoming tired or disinterested in their previous office jobs. Take graduate Jodi Yates for example, who worked in the banking sector for many years before making the switch to a job as a PT.
There’s a growing demand
With the incredible growth of the fitness industry in Australia, so too has the demand for training programs for middle-aged and elderly people. Old Australians are more conscious about health and fitness than ever before, as they aim to maintain quality of life as they age. While young, passionate PTs have a certain appeal for older generations in supporting their motivation and output, resonating with fitness professionals of a similar age who have extensive life experience is equally appealing.
It’s all about you
Ultimately, the only person stopping you from becoming a PT is… YOU! Don’t let anyone tell you that it’s not right for you or you won’t be able to succeed. With the right mindset, there’s no limit to what you can achieve in the fitness industry. Whether you want to start your own business or join a gym network, it’s up to you what your future looks like. The first step, complete your Certificate III and IV in Fitness to give you all the required knowledge and skills.
Returning to study
We understand that studying isn’t for everyone, especially returning to study after years or potentially decades since you last had your head in the books. However, things have changed since you last studied, it’s not only easier with the growth of technology, but there’s almost far more flexibility and support. With the choice to study online or face-to-face, you can complete your course on your own terms, fitting in study time around your busy lifestyle. Hear from several of our graduates who share their experience of returning to study.
Taking the leap
It’s not easy to make the decision to change your career or return to study. It takes careful consideration and planning. But it’s one that you certainly won’t regret. If becoming a personal trainer is something you’ve thought about in the past but never pursued, just know that it’s never too late!
