Is warming up, cooling down and stretching really necessary? Recent research has shown conflicting responses when it comes to warming up, cooling down, stretching and injury. The jury is still out when it comes to this area of your training, however I believe warming up, cooling down and stretching are an important part of any exercise program. Here are my thoughts on why…
Training Trends
In 2011/2012 almost 70% of Australians aged 15 and over were either sedentary or only participated in low levels of exercise(1). To a ‘fitness nerd’ like me, it’s hard to understand why so many Australians prefer to adopt a sedentary lifestyle over an active one. The truth is, ‘fitness nerds’ like me are the minority!
OK, I’m Qualified… Now what?
Congratulations! If you’re reading this, then chances are you have recently completed your fitness qualification and are looking at jumping headfirst into a brand new career in this exciting industry!
Focus on Muscle, Not Fat
While clients come in different shapes and sizes, the vast majority are focussed on getting fit to lose weight or to manage their weight.
Continuing Education
I have a friend who has a PhD in exercise physiology and is acknowledged as a world leader in his area of expertise. Every year he continues to research and refine his knowledge and understanding of how the human body responds to exercise. He has been involved in exercise research for more than 25 years. You would think that he would have reached a point where he knows everything about his specialised topic!
New Year Resolutions Uncovered
As the old year clicks over and the New Year begins, millions of people get swept into the land of New Year’s Resolutions.
You know that land – that fantasy world. Where motivation will magically descend upon us, and with the mere thought that it’s time to completely change our lives, we’ll suddenly be able to turn ourselves into completely different people.
The S Word… Sales!
I’m a Personal Trainer, I don’t need to know about sales!
It’s an area many Personal Trainers prefer not to think about. However, what a waste any of your marketing efforts will be if you miss opportunities to make a sale (or in PT terms, gain a new client!!)!
Training Through Pregnancy
Finally, we’ve progressed into the 21st Century and realised pregnancy is not a debilitating circumstance, but rather a natural and normal condition where functional physical activity should be encouraged.
Gone are the days of wrapping pregnant women in cotton wool, confining them to a total state of rest and warning them to avoid all forms of strenuous activity through fear of complications!
